Arrive by train, wander through North Laine and the Lanes, and finish by the sea. We're at 41 Meeting House Lane when you get hungry.
A day trip from London leaves room for more than the walk from Brighton station straight to the beach. Take the longer route through the shops, leave time for lunch and work your way down to the seafront. You can fit Rybka into the middle of that walk without doubling back across the city.
Start with the train
Check your outward and return journeys before you leave London, particularly at weekends when engineering work can change the route. Choose Brighton as your destination and use National Rail for current trains, fares and disruption information. Leave some room in the day between lunch and your train home.
Use the station as the start and finish of your plan. You can head directly towards the Lanes if lunch is the priority, or spend part of the morning browsing North Laine first.
Take a wander through North Laine
North Laine sits between the station and the older Lanes. It's a useful first stop for independent shops and a coffee. Allow time to browse instead of treating the walk as a race to the sea.
The names are easy to mix up: North Laine is one neighbourhood; the Lanes are the narrow streets farther south. VisitBrighton's guide to the Lanes explains the area and gives you more places to explore along the way.
Lunch on Meeting House Lane
Find Rybka at number 41, in the Lanes. Our fish-and-chip restaurant has a Polish thread running through its name and drinks: Rybka means little fish, and “rybka lubi pływać” means the fish likes to swim.
Start with the current menu to decide what you're hungry for. Fish and chips, a local beer or a frozen vodka fit the stop; you can also order at the counter to take away. For an afternoon of walking, sitting down for lunch gives you a chance to put the bags down.
We keep plenty of tables for walk-ins. If you'd like to plan around a table, check booking availability. If a time is unavailable online, you can still ask the team about walk-in availability when you arrive.
Carry on to the seafront
After lunch, continue south through the Lanes towards the beach. Browse the smaller streets on the way, or make the seafront your next stop. The Lanes sit between North Laine and the coast, so the route works as a gradual walk towards the water.
Keep your return train in mind when you decide how far to wander. If the weather turns, shorten the beach stop and give yourself more time in town. There's no need to fit every Brighton landmark into one visit.
